Library

The purpose-built Library is situated on the ground floor in the Central Building and is staffed by a  full time librarian

The Library is open to all students between 9am and 4.30pm Monday - Thursday and 9am - 4.00pm on Fridays, including break and lunchtime. Seating capacity is 120, which includes 31 computer stations with VLE and internet access. The Library has a data projector and screen, and a sound system.

Our Library is a busy place at the heart of the Queensbury campus. As part of Queensbury’s Extended Leadership Team, the Library is in an informed position to fulfill our aim of contributing fully to the success of our pupils and the Academy.

Queensbury students and the Academy Library

The Library is a quiet area for private study, homework, or just browsing for a good book to read. Offering over 10,000 books, 30 magazine and newspaper titles, and a range of materials in other formats, the Library has materials to support the curriculum from Y7 through to Y13 and works closely with subject departments to ensure that relevant resources are in stock.

Regular stock bulletins are produced and circulated to all years both on paper and electronically. A subject magazine awareness service targets GCSE and post-16 classes. Printing and photocopying on the networked Library copier/printer is free to students. All new students are issued with an Identity Card enabling them to borrow library books. Y9, Y10 and Y11 students may borrow four library items for two weeks. Y12 and Y13 students can borrow ten items for three weeks.

The Library induction programme and research-based visits during their academy career ensures that our students have ample opportunity to develop their information literacy skills. Reader development, particularly the reading of fiction, is delivered in partnership with the English department.

In the autumn term, many subject departments book their Y12 and Y13 students into the Library for refresher study and research skills sessions.

For keen readers, the Library offers an academy Book Club for Y7-11. The Student Book Club has participated in the Carnegie Medal Shadowing Scheme since 2003. All our students are encouraged to recommend stock additions.

Queensbury staff and the Academy Library

All Queensbury Staff are members of the School Library. We encourage teaching staff to take an active part in reviewing their subject stock and in recommending new publications. We provide a current awareness service for our staff, notifying them of new stock and subject magazines. In collaboration with our teaching staff we produce Library resources and study guides for schemes of work or course units.

Queensbury parents and the Academy Library

Throughout their Queensbury career, students have many opportunities to take advantage of our Library services. We hope that they will discover, and appreciate, the contribution that an academy library, and libraries in the wider world, can make to learning and to personal development.

Our online Library catalogue, known as OLIVER, is searchable from home. Parents will be informed of Library news through Parent Bulletins and Newsletters.

The Library is independent of the County Public Library Service. Students wishing to use resources from the County Library Service should do so as individual Public Library members. We recommend that our students join the County Library in order to benefit fully from the services offered on its website

We welcome your enquiries and comments. Please direct them to the email below for the attention of the library team.
